Silky smooth whiskey. Dark rum. Grand Marnier.
Oh, and vanilla brûléed orange and lemon.
You can see it. Now can you taste it?
The Red Dawn
2 oz. good whiskey (291 if you’re from Colorado) 1/2 oz. dark rum 1/4 oz. Grand Marnier* 1 slice fresh orange 1 slice fresh lemon 1 tsp. fine vanilla sugar**
Combine the whiskey, rum, Grand Marnier, and 4 large ice cubes in a large glass.
Meanwhile dust the citrus slices with vanilla sugar and brûlée with a kitchen torch. Gently stir and strain the whiskey mixture after 3 minutes. Top with brûléed fruit.
*In case you’re interested, Grand Marnier is basically an orange flavored brandy. You’ve heard of brandy, right? But you’ve also hear of Cognac and Armagnac…what’s the difference? Read a funny little diatribe here.
**Vanilla sugar: Use 1 cup finely grated sugar (powered sugar) and infuse with the insides of 1 scraped vanilla bean for 2-3 weeks for ultimate flavor.
