Basic Chocolate Cake

Homemade cake is so easy, costs less, and tastes better. This is a basic recipe that I refer back to over and over again.
It makes a dozen regular sized cupcakes, or a 9-inch round. It's easily doubled, if you need a layer cake.

Combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking soda, and salt in a mixing bowl.

In another bowl mix egg, milk, oil, vanilla, and coffee.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry. Mix until smooth. Fill muffin cups, or a prepared (buttered and floured) 8-9 inch round or square cake pan. Easy as cake.

Bake in a 350 degree oven.

12 cupcakes for 20-25 minutes
1 layer cake for 30-35 minutes

  • 1 1/4 C cake flour
  • 1 C granulated sugar
  • 1/2 C cocoa powder
  • 3/4 t baking soda
  • 3/4 t baking powder
  • 1/2 t salt
  • *
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 C milk
  • 1/4 C oil
  • 1/2 t vanilla
  • 1/2 C coffee, a coffee liqueur is an excellent substitute
